To The Parents Of An Average Kid

Image
If your child gets straight As...this post is not for you. If your child is a star athlete...this post is not for you. If your child is first chair flute, the soloist in choir or the lead in the school play...this post is not for you. This is for the parents of an average kid.   Average kids do exist.  We don't see them that often because we're too busy trying to make life extraordinary.  Every other kid, except mine and maybe yours (if you'll admit to it) excels in absolutely EVERYTHING.  Everyone else is happy.  No one else yells.  No one else struggles. BULLSHIRT!  (Yes, I said that.) Average, ordinary kids DO exist.  Despite what we may want to think or are being spoon-fed, they are the majority.  We are the parents of ORDINARY human beings.  Not the ones at the top of the class; nor the ones at the bottom.  The ones who don't win award.  The ones who try, but not all the time.  The ones w...

The Immigration Problem

Image
Don't deny it.  Don't keep your head in the sand.  We have a problem.  These "people" are coming HERE.  Here to OUR land.  Do they come legally?  Do they come illegally?  Does that really matter?  They are coming!  They are landing on OUR shores and ruining our way of life.   These people are "different."  They look different.  They SMELL different. They speak differently (if they speak OUR language at all).  They don't respect our land. Think of how beautiful everything was BEFORE they came.  They don't respect our rules. They don't respect our way of life.  They bring disease. Do they even bathe?  Who knows how many have gotten sick or died as a result?   They are criminals.  They want; they take.   They are violent.  They kill. We've got to keep them out!  This is OUR land! Ok, so there's just one thing... Am I really talking about 2019?  I could ...

June 2nd

I do not more for the loss of 7 years...which will turn into 8 and soon it will be a decade and more. But I will not mourn the loss. Instead I will celebrate the 39 years.  Rejoice in the time that we did have.  Be grateful that you were not just my sibling but also my friend. That does not mean there is not sorrow.  That I wish you were here and I could share with you the good, the bad and everything in between.  But I do not want to focus on this date.  I don't want to focus on the sad. Because your life was NOT sad.  Your life was silly and fun.  Your face was full of smiles and that's what I will remember. Those are things worth remembering.  Those are things that will always bring a smile.  And we all know you had a GREAT smile. I remember your learning how to crawl.  I remember your performance as Jacque the Mouse in elementary school.  I remember you and the tuba and sousaphone.  Of your graduation from ...

Memorial Day

Image
While we observed Memorial Day on Monday (the last Monday of the month), originally, Memorial Day was observed on the 30th (from 1868 to 1970).  The day is one of remembrance:  honoring those who perished while on active duty.  I am lucky, and so were my ancestors (or at least the ancestors that I know of); while I have had many relatives who have served in the military, I can't recall one that died while on active duty.  While my husband had an uncle who perished at the Battle of Anzio (WWII), as far as I know my ancestors survived the Revolutionary War (albeit by switching allegiances after being captured and settling in New England after the war) and the Civil War (although not living well afterwards, a result of being imprisoned in either Andersonville or Libby Prison).  My grandfather was too young to serve in WWI and too old for WWII, but my father served in the reserves, my uncle (his brother) made the Army his career (retiring as a lieutenant co...

Who Will? Will You?

Note:  I'm usually an upbeat and positive person (or at least I'd like to think I am!), but everyone has their limits. It's not one thing or one person...it's EVERYTHING. It's not the straw that broke the camel's back...it's the straws that break the camel's back over and over again.  It's the camel's back that heals and then is broken over and over again in a neverending cycle that wears you to the bone.    Some days you've just got to scream, cry or whatever.  I'd like to think of this as vomiting up my pent up feelings and frustrations.  Hopefully, once I do this, I will be able to move on without the anger, sorrow, etc.  (I usually do.)  As Paul McCartney so eloquently once said/sang:  "I've had enough; I can't put up with any more.  No, No, No, No, no, no."  We all get to that point...and, for the most part, then we go on and we DO put up with more...until we get to that point again.  So with that said, I giv...

Screwing Up

Image
This is NOT a secret.  I am a screw up.  I make mistakes.  I make a lot of mistakes.  I do the wrong thing; go the wrong way.  Some days I seem to do absolutely nothing right. This is NOT me putting myself down.  This is me being honest.  This is me being human. I make mistakes.  I try to learn from those mistakes.  Sometimes I don't and I make the same mistake again. Sometimes I second guess myself.  I try to be two steps ahead, which actually sets me 5 steps back. Recently I've been doing a lot of spreadsheet analysis.  I've been checking and double checking numbers to make sure they match up and align.  I can't tell you how many times I've thought I've gotten it right only to find out I didn't.  I've screwed up more times than I'd care to admit. But I DO admit it. I OWN my mistakes.   I don't pass the buck.  I don't try to blame someone else.  I may point out an error...

In Praise of Tuesday

Image
While I've got nothing against the weekends, I don't shout, Thank God It's Friday because my Fridays are usually pretty crazy.  In the workplace it means consolidating a half dozen reports and comparing them to two other reports, which don't come in until at least 6 PM, doing an analysis of the data before passing it on to my boss for a Monday morning meeting.  So while my Friday mornings start at the same time as every other weekday (that would be around 4:30 AM), they wrap up later.  Can you see why I don't sing the praises of Friday?   Weekends are great, but almost always crazy busy.  Before you know it, Monday is here again.  And for me, Monday is just as crazy as Friday (though thankfully not as long, at least not work wise.)  Thursdays are also busy work wise for me with Wednesdays not being quite so hectic, but I do have choir rehearsal in the evening, so it's a long day too. Which brings me to Tuesday.  It's the q...
