I Bought a Mattress, Sight Unseen.
It's not as crazy as it sounds. (Though it does sound pretty crazy) Here's what happened.
Ever since we moved to the
Poconos, I've been thinking we should get a queen sized bed for the guest
bedroom. Right now we have a twin that came all the way from the shore.
There's no wrong with it but if we have guests only one person can sleep there.
Basically it's the bedroom that my son has been using. But I want to have
something larger for my in-laws when they come to visit.
I've been debating this for a
while and was uncertain what to do. Then I found out that my neighbor (the one
with the giant skeleton on his front lawn), works as a manager at Mattress
Firm. I figured he would be a good person to go to discuss mattresses... after
all I trusted him and I know that he is an honest human being.
Back in January, we talked and
he told me of his stores was going to be shutting down and I would be able to
get a decent deal. That sounded like a good thing to me.
The days went by and nothing
really happened (other than life, which has a way of speeding by). Then
last week, I got a text while I was at the office.
"Did you want to do a box
spring and frame or did you want to do an adjustable base one that moves like
lifting the head and feet pricing out some medium feel mattresses for you now.”
Okay, we are on! I didn't
want an adjustable frame, just your basic set up and he came back
with:
"I have a medium feel set
that I can do for you display mattress but practically brand new since we just
launched it two weeks ago. Box spring frame delivery set up before tax normally
xxx, can get it to you for xxx. It's the pressure smart mattress by
Dreamcloud."
The pricing (which I have
specifically not shown here) was good, I was in...
Before I knew it: "I
need a couple of pieces of information from you. First & last name, address
& email. Soonest delivery would be Sunday. They call the night before the
two hour timeframe. If Sunday is not good we deliver every day of the week with
the exception of Tuesday and Friday and then what I will do I will write the
order and be sending you a text message with a payment link that'll come from
my computer system. It'll probably take me maybe a half hour or so to write the
order."
Before I left the office that
day I had received the order, paid for it (isn't technology great?) and was
getting a new bed on Mother's Day. (As well as having the old twin
mattress and box spring taken away. The old frame they wouldn't take, so
we took it apart and are still figuring out exactly what we are going to do.)
I made sure when I left NJ for
PA that I brought along with me some sheets that I had that were Queen
size. (In NJ we have a Queen bed, in PA we have a Split King.) One for
warmer weather and then some fleece sheets for the colder months. I also found
an old bed skirt that I no longer needed in NJ and brought it with me.
Saturday night I got a text
that my new bed would arrive between 3:30-5:30. That gave us time to take
apart the twin bed.
I was thrilled when I got a
text around 1:30 that said they were on their way. (Early!) They
were at our house (and they came in the correct way, even though they passed
the turn and had to back up.) They pulled in and took care of everything
very quickly. Two guys pulled out the old stuff, built the frame and set
up in the mattress and box spring in under 30 minutes (maybe in under
20.) Furthermore, it fit perfectly in the space that we had for it. (It's
not that big a room.)
We are letting everything
"air out" (that "chemical" smell that comes with everything
these days). Tomorrow we will put on the mattress pad (thanks to my
mother in law) and sheets. When my in-laws come to visit my mother-in-law
is gifting me some quilts and a comforter set.
What this all means is that
come Thanksgiving my in-laws can stay over (and not in a hotel) while my son
will sleep in the "dungeon." (In reality the library which has
a bed in it, but there are no windows, so it IS dark in there, but doesn't that
make for better sleeping? Plus it is wall to wall books...what could be
better than that.)
And that's how I bought a
mattress sight unseen. With a little help (okay a lot of help) from my
neighbor.
