Valentine's Day For "Old People"
For the record, I am
"old". I think I have always been old. I think and act
like an "old person." Which for me means I think logically
(most of the time), I am reasonable (most of the time) and I often (not always)
thrifty. And that means that while today may be Valentine's Day, I am not
getting, nor do I necessarily want, flowers, candy or jewelry. I'm not
even getting a card, nor do I want one. (Well, that's not completely
true. When my father was alive and healthy, he would always send me a
Valentine's Day card and I DO wish I could have one of those today.)
It is a cold Valentine's Day
here in the Northeast. (Side note: I am SO OVER winter. For
the most part it's been colder than usual, something that I'm not fond
of. We've also had more snow storms than we've had in a long time, which
I am also not a fan of. We haven't had that much snow accumulation, but
we have had day after day of snowfall and ice. Again, not huge
accumulations, but coatings that need to be shoveled or swept away. I'm over
it.) It's a Friday and a three day weekend to boot, but we're not
planning any romantic getaways. We never did.
If it were to make
"plans" I'd have taken the day off and settled in to watch movies on
TCM. They've got a good line up today, showing some of my favorite movies
today, such as Dear Heart, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, High Society,
Casablanca and Marty. Not your typical romantic
movies, but darned good. So if you have nothing to do...
Instead my plans with my
husband are our typical "exciting" ones. After work, we will
bundle up and go to: Walmart (while I'm not thrilled with them, they do
have some items that we can only seem to find there), Ollie's (because
they sent me yet another 15% off coupon and I can't resist that even if I'm
only going to buy a few dollars worth of items and I'm hoping my favorite
cashier will be there: https://bfthsboringblog.blogspot.com/2024/11/pocono-adventures-in-weather.html)
and Weis (because
the store we visit has good produce and last time we were there we managed to
find the elusive Dr Pepper Blackberry Zero Sugar and are hoping that there
is more in stock.) Maybe we'll pick up dinner somewhere along the
way. Or maybe not.
We're boring. (We've
always been boring.) We're old. We love each other and do things
together (https://bfthsboringblog.blogspot.com/2025/02/what-kind-of.html),
even things that are humdrum. And we'll keep doing our thing no matter
what day it is because that's who we are.
So on this Friday, February
14th, I wish you a Happy VD (my "old school" friends will get
it). No matter what you do, or don't do, enjoy. Give yourself and
the world a little love today, in whatever way you might see fit. To
quote Bacharach and David: "What the world needs now is love, sweet
love. No not just for some but for everyone." Let's take it to
heart.
