October Means Change?
Seasonally, October is definitely a time of change. The leaves change color. (And this year the colors have been absolutely gorgeous.) The temperature changes. (I'm not too thrilled with the drop below 40, but...). The air and the smells in the air change.
But maybe there's more to it
than that? Just this week I noticed a "Coming Soon" sign from a
real estate agent on the front lawn on the house next door. The house
that was once my family home for over 40 years. The house that was
officially sold at the end of October 7 years ago.
And if I recall correctly (and this
was a long time ago), we moved to that house (when I was only 6) in
October. I could be wrong; after all that is a LONG time ago, but it
seems to me that it was then when we moved approximately 1/2 miles from the
house that I lived in with my parents from birth to 6 to this slightly larger
house right next door to my grandparents.
While I'm sure the house that I
lived in for the first 6 years of my life has changed on the inside (surely the
pink bathroom has been updated), the outside has stayed mostly the same.
The color on the outside has changed from white with green shutters to
yellow/gold with brown shutters, but otherwise everything else seems to have
stayed the same. I don't think I've been inside since I was in elementary
school, but in my mind I can still see the knotty pine in the kitchen, the
stairs at the back of my parent's bedroom that lead to the two small rooms on
the second floor (it wasn't much of a second floor) and the storage
closet/attic space in what was once my bedroom. (When I was "old
enough" to move to the 2nd floor since the only bathroom in the house was
on the first.) Perhaps someday I'll muster up the courage to knock on the
door and try to get a peak.
The house that I really grew up
in (the one that is for sale), has definitely changed since it changed hands in
October of 2019. It needed change and although I've never been inside
since the house was purchased, major changes have been made both inside and
out. (Which in some way makes it a little easier to live next door
because it no longer bares much resemblance to the place I called home for
decades.) The interior most definitely has to have been improved.
The exterior? Well I still mourn the loss of all the trees that were cut
down, especially the lovely dogwood in the front yard, which my son (when he
was much younger) would climb with ease. (Any one could.) I'll
admit to crying when over a dozen trees came down. (And of course I
blogged about it: https://bfthsboringblog.blogspot.com/2019/11/the-death-of-trees.html)
I wonder who and what will come
next. Will the two car garage that was converted into a one car with a
large shop/work space remain or will it revert back to a multi-car
garage? Will the patio cease to be a place to park vehicles and be used
as a patio? What will happen to the mound of dirt (that has since been
covered with some plant life) with a patio umbrella sticking out of it
remain? (I hope not!) Will the new owner plant trees to block out
the business that lies at the end of the property? (I am so grateful for
the trees that were planted at the back of my property which protects it
somewhat from this and makes the house mostly invisible from the major
thoroughfare in the distance.)
October is quickly coming to a
close. Change continues. It always does.
