F D J T: A Sunny Spring Saturday "Walk"

What could be better on a (sort
of) Sunny Spring (in name only) Saturday than to go for a walk with a few
friends and LOTS of strangers? So that's what I did on Saturday, March
28th in East Stroudsburg and Stroudsburg. (Because that's where the walk
took me/us.)
While walking alone can be nice
(and I do that a lot), I wanted to join a group of people, but was shy.
Luckily, I knew someone who was going to walk (along with her husband) and who
was willing to show me the way and keep me in my comfort zone. (For which
I am extremely grateful.)
Late Saturday morning, I drove
from my house to her house which is in the same unincorporated community, but a
different township. (I live in Barrett, she lives in Paradise and another
friend lives in Price...and yet we all have the same zip code. I know
this makes no sense.) I found their cottage, and we packed up necessities
(like specially made hats...thanks to another special person who I don't know
well but I am grateful for the hat) and she and I drove in one car and her
husband in another since our walk was starting in one location and ending in
another. Genius. Her husband parked at the end of our route and we
picked up him and went to the beginning of our route, a park mile or so away.
We also had signs, because what
is a walk without signs? I definitely need better sign making
skills. My paper F(aith), D(etermination), J(ustice) T(ruth) should have
been larger and stronger. But then again who thought on Thursday when it
was 70 degrees out that by Saturday it would be in the mid-30s and windy?
(I should have known about the wind though...wind has been whipping us all
winter.) Because so many people would be joining us on our
"walk" we got there early. That gave me a chance to get to know
my friend's husband a little better. (I hope that makes him a friend
too.) Both of them are retired nurses who have dedicated their lives to
service, which is an inspiration to me.
After about 90 minutes of
hanging out in the park, where we sang, chanted and listened, we headed
out. We walked down Washington to Main. As I said, it is not a far
distance that we walked, just over a mile, but it took a while because there
were so many people. (I'm not going to make a guess as to how many.
But it was a good turnout considering that according to recent census info,
East Stroudsburg is home to 10,000 and Stroudsburg 6,000 and the surrounding
areas are not THAT populated...we're not talking major city status.
Nonetheless, I'm guessing there were several hundred people and if anyone comes
up with numbers, I'd be happy to update this information.) We walked
along, respectfully. There were crossing guards along the route to keep
us and traffic safe. The atmosphere was friendly. Of course there
was one lone "heckler" along the route (because you always have to
have that one guy), but what was uplifting was all the traffic that drove
alongside of us, honking and cheering us on. It seemed to me (and I am
biased), that the majority of people were supportive of our walk. (Except
for that one guy.) For me it was inspirational to hear the honks and cheers, to
get the waves and smiles and it made every step more worthwhile. (I'd
also like to say that as I am "officially" I am a
Presbyterian...although I attend and support both Presbyterian and Episcopal churches...I
appreciated that the Presbyterian church on our route had their doors open with
a sign that restrooms were available to all. That is an act of
Christianity!)
As we reached our destination,
people were singing and chanting. It was uplifting and PEACABLE. I
heard not one negative word (except for that one guy...who had disappeared when
we drove back to get the other car.) The only thing that would have made this
walk better was warmer temperatures and less wind.
I have a feeling that this will
not be my last walk. And while I enjoy walking (hey...I'm a dedicated walker),
I wish it was. Who knows...maybe things will change? A girl's gotta
be positive.
If these walks are needed and
continued, I will be there. And I'm pretty sure so will my friends.
We will be there to lift up. To support (the Constitution). Because
the will and the determination of the people will not be broken.
Faith.
Determination. Justice. Truth. I will walk for it.
