Jesus Christ SuperStar / Godspell

Image
I was going to title this post Jesus Christ Superstar vs Godspell , but that wouldn't be fair.  I love both musicals.  I can sing every lyric from both.  They both had an incredible influence on me growing up (and to this day) and to be honest, as a youth they taught me more than any Sunday school class.  (Or maybe I just wasn't in the right space for church learning at the time.)  Every single year I watch them both on Holy Week.  (Usually Good Friday, but not always.  I do however, always watch.)  This being Holy Saturday seemed for me to be a good time to talk about them both.  Remember, these are my thoughts and experiences...you don't have to agree (or disagree) with me.  But be open and thoughtful. Jesus Christ Superstar came first for me.  As I have said my mom had the Broadway album (which did NOT include the whole show.  WHY?), and I listened to it a lot.  I was torn if I wanted to sing the r...

Good Friday (and Holy Week) Traditions

Image
It's Good Friday.  For me that's the day that my Holy week traditions started.  As a little kid, it was all about listening to  Jesus Christ Superstar , an album which my mother got one Easter.  (Turns out it was "highlights" from the original Broadway cast...it took me years to find out there was MORE music!  And say what you will there will never be a better Judas than Ben Vereen!)  When I got older it also meant watching  Godspell  (NY/NJ locals should know that it always aired in the afternoon on channel 9.)  At that time church wasn't my thing.  Sometimes I'd go; sometimes not.  So this music was my tie to Easter story. But things changed (for the better in this case) and I became involved my church again.  (It's amazing what new leadership can do.)  As a young adult, holy week became something I actively participated in.  It wasn't Palm Sunday without palms (obviously) and a singing of "The Palms" ...

Spring Renewal

Image
Spring has officially been here for nearly two weeks and outside life is blossoming.  (Inside life is blooming as well, which I'll get to.)  While the temperatures today don't necessarily feel like spring (we're only in the 40s...I need better temperatures...PLEASE), we are moving towards warmer and brighter days.  Again, even though it doesn't feel like it today...it's chilly and overcast with drizzle.  Personally, I wish the drizzle would stop and we would get a good soaking rain.  Because if it's going to be wet, let's go all in.  Let's have a good downpour! Why do I want rain when I am such a sun worshipper?  They say April showers bring May flowers and I'm all in for that (although I'd like my flowers sooner please), that's not the reason I want rain.  You see, another sign of spring renewal here is the "opening" of the pond.  What does that entail?  The netting that is placed over it for the winter is removed.  The critters ...

April Fool

Image
It's April 1st, or as it's also known April Fool's Day.  I was never one to try and pull a big practical joke, but both my mother and I would try small jokes that sometimes worked and sometimes didn't.  I could usually get them to work on my mother if I got her early enough in the morning, before she realized the date.  And my "tricks" were usually simple:  OMG!  Do you see what's in the backyard?!  Or "What happened to your car?"  So on April 1st, I'm thinking of my mom and wishing I could try a prank out on her. But today pulling a prank or a gag would be difficult.  What crazy thing could I say? Got Covid?  Inject yourself with bleach Hey did you see, gas is under $2 a gallon? Did you know windmills cause cancer? Did you hear?  They're tearing down (part of) the White House! We can stop that hurricane with a nuclear weapon! Let's replace teachers with robots/AI! I don't like the results; let's storm the...

F D J T: A Sunny Spring Saturday "Walk"

Image
Note: This is a "pseudo" follow up to  https://bfthsboringblog.blogspot.com/2026/03/g-r-e-t.html  and  https://bfthsboringblog.blogspot.com/2026/03/f-d-t.html What could be better on a (sort of) Sunny Spring (in name only) Saturday than to go for a walk with a few friends and LOTS of strangers?  So that's what I did on Saturday, March 28th in East Stroudsburg and Stroudsburg.  (Because that's where the walk took me/us.) While walking alone can be nice (and I do that a lot), I wanted to join a group of people, but was shy.  Luckily, I knew someone who was going to walk (along with her husband) and who was willing to show me the way and keep me in my comfort zone.  (For which I am extremely grateful.) Late Saturday morning, I drove from my house to her house which is in the same unincorporated community, but a different township.  (I live in Barrett, she lives in Paradise and another friend lives in Price...and yet we all have the same zip co...

W hat does GREAT mean?  I decided the best way to was to go to the definitive dictionary...Merriam-Webster, which gives us multitudes of answers: 1.      notably large in size : huge 2.      large in number or measure  (example:  great amount of money) 3.       remarkable in magnitude, degree, or effectiveness (example:  war causes great bloodshed) 4.      used as a generalized term of approval  (example:  a great time at the party) 5.      eminent, distinguished:  (example:  George Washington was a great man) 6.      markedly superior in character or quality: noble 7.       remarkably skilled  (example:  Jack Nicklaus is a golf great) 8.       more remote in a family relationship by a single generation than a specified relative (great grandfather) 9.  ...

Welcome Spring?

Image
Spring officially arrives (or arrived, depending on when you are reading this) today.  (Unless you are on the opposite of the world, like my cousins, in which case, welcome to autumn.)  Welcome Spring!  I've missed you so much!  I am so ready for you! I am ready for my heat not to turn on at 6 in the morning. (Like an alarm clock.) I am ready for my feet not to freeze when I get out of bed and they hit the bedroom floor.  (Although I will be eternally grateful for the heated bathroom floor.  Total genius.) I am ready to go back outside and walk for exercise rather than "walking" inside.  (I've been doing Leslie Sansone's walk-outs for decades.  Love them, but I am ready to get some fresh air.) I am ready to NOT wear layers.  Yes  I love my sweaters (and they can hide a multitude of flaws), but I am ready to go back to skirts (even with my veiny legs) and blouses (even those with no sleeves...so what if my arm fat wobbles?). I am rea...

Good Bye Arlene's Bridal Salon

Image
Nearly 30 years ago (whew...that's a long time) I got married.  Since it's been three decades, my memories of certain aspects of the wedding and the build up to it are a bit fuzzy.  I vaguely remember going to one of those bridal events/shows where you could find just about everything you might need to make YOUR day everything you wanted it to be.  I'm pretty sure that I went with my maid of honor (who I have sadly lost touch with...that doesn't speak well of me, I'm sure.)  But there is one thing that does stand out in my mind; finding my dress. Now my wedding was going to be relatively small.  I had a maid of honor, but no other bridesmaids.  My husband had a best man, but no groomsmen.  My (late) brother and a good friend of my husband (who hit on my maid of honor which may be one of the reasons we lost touch), served as ushers.  The wedding was not held at a church (although it was officiated by my pastor and my unofficial "aunt" who w...

St. Patrick's Day

Image
Are you wearing green?  It's St. Patrick's Day!  Everybody's Irish on St. Patrick's Day.  Or at least we can celebrate the Irish and their traditions today.  Why not?   St. Patrick was a real person.  Over the centuries the stories of what he did have grown. One of the legends is that he chased all snakes from Ireland into the sea after they attacked him during a 40-day fast.  (Am I seeing parallels of Jesus here?) Of course snakes didn't exist in Ireland at that time.  (Or so I'm told, maybe that's another legend.)  Bu we don't have to take that literally.  (As most stories shouldn't.   Stories aren’t necessarily literal but exist to try and teach us something.)  It is said that the removal of "snakes" is a metaphor for the removal of paganism and the focus on Christianity (specifically Catholicism).  Or as I found on  History.Com;  " the legend might be more metaphorical in nature. In Christianity...

Thursday the 12...

Image
While I remember Friday, March 13, 2020 extremely well.  Thursday not so much.  Which is a shame.  Because I wish I could remember more about that day.  But who knew? Thursday, March 12th, 2020 was the last day I worked in Lyndhurst, NJ.  Although the ride from my house to there (and home) could be frustrating (just as frustrating as getting home from Newark, but on public transportation), the office suite was great.  I, as many of my co-workers (and there weren't that many in the office), had office sized cubicles.  I had a view that looked out on the marshlands of the area.  Yes, some may say it's stinky and it was at times, but it was also beautiful.  There were birds.  And in the distance there was the city.  (And I could count the cars on the NJ Turnpike.)  When the sun was out, my space got HOT, no matter what the season.  And when it was cloudy or raining...I had that (illicit) space heater going, even in t...

Sunday, Sunday...

Image
...can't trust that day!   Okay, so I know the song is actually "Monday, Monday," but yesterday was a strange one with some ups and downs and lots of questions. The day started out dark.  Literally!  While I love the coming warm weather and longer days, I'm not a fan of moving that clock ahead and waking up in darkness.  It didn't help that it was really foggy out that morning, which made my drive to church a little dicey.   Things were good at church ( https://bfthsboringblog.blogspot.com/2026/03/international-womens-day-2026.html ) and my drive back home was mostly clear. I didn't even need a coat!  (Hoorah!) Once at home, even though it was warm(ish) outside, I enjoyed coffee by the fireplace.  (Love doing that.) And then the highlight of the day...I was in the family room and looked out the back window and saw: Now I know it's hard to see, but there are 10 goldfish swimming around in the murky pond.  The pond is murky because w...
