Get Over It

I'm dating myself once again, but one of my favorite songs by the Eagles is from their Hell Freezes Over album of 1994:  "Love Will Keep Us Alive."  (It was actually the song my husband and I danced to when we were married.  Which may come to a surprise to some of you as we are both huge Beatles fans and it was the Beatles that brought us together, but that's another story.)  However, the first track on the album is also a favorite...and that's "Get Over It."

If you don't know it; you should go find it and give it a listen.  It's got a great beat and their lyrics...well they seem relevant today just as they were back then and my personal favorite is:

"Wave it like a flag wear it like a crown

Got your mind in the gutter bringin' everybody down

Complain about the present blame it on the past

I'd like to find your inner child kick its little ass"

I'd tend to agree with them.  Get Over it!  Move on.  Give it a rest.  The past is past.  Shut the heck up!

However, I might not be talking about what you think I am talking about.  I also think (and I could be wrong because I didn't write the song) that Don Henley and (the late great) Glenn Frey weren't talking about the "big stuff."  The song seems to be aimed at the whiners who bitch and moan, blame others for everything and don't actually DO anything.

("I turn on the tube what do I see

A whole lotta people cryin' don't blame me

They point their crooked little fingers everybody else

Spend all their time feelin' sorry for themselves")

I don't think they were talking (singing) about getting over the true tragedies and disasters of life.  I don't think the lyrics apply to death and murder (like children dying in a school shooting) or violence (like someone being beaten) or true injustices (like victims of crime).  Those are things we can't get over.  Nor should we.  When justice is NOT served (right now I'm thinking of all the victims of Jeffrey Epstein and his cohorts who have still not yet been fully investigated and/or charge) there is no getting over it. A person who would suggest such is frankly a callous, uncaring, hypocritical ass.  (That's putting it mildly, right?) When someone is in real pain, they can't just move on.

However, there are definitely times/things that people do need to get over.

So I say:

  • You didn't win something (like an election)? Get over it.
  • Court case didn't go the way you wanted it to?  Get over it.
  • Someone said something not so nice about you that is not libelous?  Get over it.
  • Didn't win a prize?  Get over it.
  • Someone said something you didn't like?  Get over it.
  • Didn't get what you wanted?  Get over it.  Get over it!  GET OVER IT!

The world is full of too much BS these days.  There are important issues that need to be addressed and need to be addressed properly and lawfully. (Also respectfully, but...)

Bitching, moaning and pitching a fit doesn't do a darned thing.  (I'd argue that it makes you look like a weak human being when you act like a self-serving egotistical ass, but shouldn't that go without saying?) Get over it!  Move on!

And if you can't, maybe the problem isn't the world around you, but you.  (Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's you.)  Maybe you can’t get over it, but we are sure over you.  We are ready to move on.  And we will.  We will.
