Cold & Ice = ?

I think we all know that it's been snowy.  (Even in places that aren't supposed to have snow.)  It's been cold.  Bitter cold.  We are surrounded by ice, which can be extremely dangerous and at this point I think everyone just wants it to go away...either by melting it or just chopping it to pieces and throwing in the deepest dirtiest ditch where it can melt or rot...I've just had it.  (Haven't we all?)

But what concerns me most (well maybe that's an overstatement) is that I think this weather is making people stupid.  (Or in maybe that should be MORE stupid than usual.)  And to back up this observation, here are two examples and photographic proof.

Example 1:  I live on a private drive.  (I know I've said this so many times that you have got to be tired of me saying it.)  No matter what the weather, it is not a through street.  It does not magically turn into one when the sun is out.  It doesn't suddenly appear in the rain or snow.  It's not a through street.  You understand that, right?

Because it is a private drive, the township does not plow it.  That's okay because I have a service that plows out my semi-circular driveway and to get to it, the plow company plows the road.  I'll admit it's not the most perfect job and there is no salt laid down to melt what is left behind.  However you can get to my house and use either end of the driveway to get in.  (Although I rarely use the east entrance; the west entrance is closer to my garage.)  I have walked down both sides of my driveway, up the street and to the mailbox without any issues.  (Although I have had to avoid ice...and if it were warmer I'd chop it up and throw it into the bushes...I have absolutely no love of ice.)

Getting back to my example, it's a private drive and it's plowed as far as my driveway.  Past that, it is not plowed.  So you cannot get to my neighbor's house to the east and you most definitely CANNOT go through.  It doesn't matter what season it is, it's not a through street.  If you pass my house and go onto the really unpaved section of "drive" you will end up in my neighbor's driveway.  (Which is cordoned off with saw horses to TRY and prevent people from going through.)  Right now, because of the snow and the fact that it is NOT plowed, once you hit the east end of my driveway you are facing snow.  After the storm last week, this is what it looked like:

So, would you were faced with this, what would you do?  If you were driving NOT a big truck, but a small low to the ground car, what would you do?  Certainly you would NOT try to drive through it, right?

If you would instead maybe curse yourself and then back out or maybe even use my driveway as a "jug handle" (in which case I would curse you out), congratulations, you are a relatively intelligent person.

That's NOT what happened yesterday.  Somebody in a small red car tried to keep going.  And surprise, surprise, it didn't go well.  They didn't get far before they got stuck.  So they TRIED to back out.  And I'm pretty sure they didn't have 4-wheel drive.  I could hear the grinding noise all the way in the office.  They car went back and forth, but really got nowhere.  The driver kept revving the engine.  This went on for a good 5 minutes or so until finally (by the grace of God and I have to think God was blessing me and not the drive), the car managed to back out of the way.  The car backed up and then sat on there for another 5 or so minutes before finally backing all the way out of the street.  (Which is what most people do when they realize that the road leads nowhere, including the 18 wheeler that tried to get to a business on the street to the east of us because his GPS told him he could get there...even when his eyes told him he couldn't).  Now all that is left is the memory...and the proof that someone was stupid enough to try this:

If you look close enough you can see the only thing that has successfully made their way down the snowy path is the deer.

Example 2:  Although we are not a through street, as I have said, you can get to our house.  Maybe I don't want to go out due to the extreme cold, but I do it.  UPS has come to our front door.  Amazon has come to our front door.  Until today.  (You know where this is going, right?)

My husband had a package that was coming today via Amazon. (You know the company that made Jeff Bezos millions each year, even though his "salary" is only $80,000, he makes much more!  Enough to fund a $75 million dollar "documentary"/infomercial.)  When he got the notification that it had been delivered, he went to the front door where deliveries generally appear.  Nothing.  So he went over to the garage to see if it had been left there.  Nothing.  So looked at the notification a little more closely and checked out the photo of it being left in a "secure location."
Okay, that's NOT the photo he got.  That's the photo I took as the two of us walked up to our mailbox.
I also took this photo:

It's not IN the mailbox (which it could easily fit into), but it's IN THE SNOW.  Or perhaps I should say it's sticking up from the snow.

Now you might think the Amazon delivery person couldn't get to the mailbox because of the snow, but...

Although we couldn't clear away all the snow, we DID dig out a path to get to the mailbox.  (And since the snow we have, sporadically, gotten the mail.)

So, we have one person in a small car who thinks they can drive through several inches of snow and then we have an Amazon delivery person who thinks they CAN'T get to our house, or even our mailbox.

Sometimes you just have to shake your head and wonder.  When the snow and ice clears, will people's heads clear as well?

Once again I say:  42 days to spring!
