What Kind of Person Am I?
"I'm your everyday, customary kind of woman
Practical as salt
Modest to a fault
Conservative with a budget
Liberal with a meal"
So those lyrics are from the
great 1970s musical piping. And with the exception of the modest to a
fault, I think those lyrics from the song ordinary woman pretty much describe
me. I am a conservative liberal.
Does such a thing exist? Well I
exist and again it pretty much describes me. I am conservative in some aspects
of my life and liberal in others. You can be both. Honestly, I think the world
would be a better place if we were all a little bit of both.
Let me talk about my
conservative side first. I try to be extremely conservative with my
money. With cost continually rising, I do my best to stretch my dollar. That
doesn't mean being cheap. I have found out the hard way that being cheap can
actually result in being very costly. Sometimes the cheap is not worth
it. I've said it before and will say it again...you need to do your
research. And I always try to do so before spending. When making a major
purchase, I don't want to spend a lot of money but I do want to make sure that
what I'm purchasing is of a decent quality and is going to last. Maybe that's
why I'm not so fond of cell phones which constantly need to be upgraded or even
worse break and cannot be repaired. Yes I'm old I believe that things should be
able to be repaired and not just replaced.
But I'm not just conservative
when it comes to money. I'm conservative when it comes to our environment and
our planet. Because I believe a conservative should be someone who wants to
conserve the world which we live. Meaning that we have this planet and we need
to conserve it. We need to take care of it not just for ourselves but for our
children and for their children. We need to be conservative when it comes to
the future. I'd like to say that's because I'm a Christian and God has called
me to be a good steward to the planet. However I don't think Christianity has a
soul cap on caring for the planet. But conservatives should. It's about taking
care, it's about conserving what exists and making sure that it is available
not just today but tomorrow.
But I am also a liberal. I'm
liberal with my love. I'm one of those crazy people who believes the more love
you give, the more love you get. Or as my beloved Beatles once said: "and
in the end the love you take is equal to the love you make." It's true.
The more you put out into the world when it comes to love the more you get back
in amazing and unexpected ways. But you have to be liberal with your love.
I am also liberal when it comes
to caring for people. We all are of the human race and we need to take
care of each other. That doesn't mean that we just randomly give things away,
but it does mean that I feel called to share with others. By share, I
don't mean money (although I do that as well...with conservatism). I
share my time. I share my talents. I share my love. I am
intentionally liberal when it comes to all those things.
I suppose you could say I'm
liberal in my thinking, but I'm conservative when it comes to sharing my
thoughts. After all, no matter which side of the fence you might be
sitting on, NO ONE wants someone else's thoughts or opinions shoved down their
throats. Doing so is certainly NOT going to make someone change their
mind and more likely it's going to make that person LESS likely to listen. (No
matter what political party or idea someone supports, when a person starts
ranting, you've lost me. Even if I completely agree with that person...I
don't want to hear it.) When someone asks for my thoughts, I can be
liberal in giving them. But unless I am asked, I remain conservative.
I'd like it if our leaders were
the same, but...And again I'm not talking about one particular party or
another. As a matter of fact, I think these parties are part of the
problem. Political parties may be extremely conservative or
liberal. The majority of people are a combination of the two. (I
never thought I was unique.) But both parties lack focus on what is
really needed; to listen to the people and act accordingly. After all they
are supposed to be public servants; that is they serve the ALL the public and
not just one specific group. They are supposed to listen to all
viewpoints and not ignore the ones that don't necessarily mesh with their own.
So if you've made it thus far
and read all of this; am I conservative liberal or a liberal conservative?
Does it really matter? After all, I'm just..."I'm your everyday,
customary kind of woman. Practical as salt. Modest to a fault."
