WTF? It's OUR Problem

Okay, I KNOW you've heard me bitch and moan (probably way too much) about the sinkhole situation on Route 80 which has made driving on this major interstate highway a nightmare.  Now a sinkhole has opened up on the Garden State Parkway.  (Great timing since Memorial Day weekend is 6 days away.) Did I mention the NJ Transit strike?  The buses are running, but the trains are not.  Or how about the issues at Newark airport?  You could say, "Hey Bfth, shut up about it already.  It's a Jersey problem. It's not MY problem."  Or is it?

The Newark airport issue, where air traffic controllers equipment went black, actually originated in Pennsylvania (that's where the radar center is based).  The issue affects all those who were in the airspace (not just those flying in and out of Newark) And now other airports (like Denver) have had similar issues.  Just a Jersey problem?

The NJ Transit strike...it's just trains, right?  Not a big deal.  But how many THOUSANDS of people take the train into (and out of) NYC?  They can just take a bus right?  Well...maybe...but the buses can't handle as many people.  So who gets left behind?  How much longer is a commute going to take since more people would be getting on and off?   Is it really just a Jersey problem?

And finally, back to route 80 sinkhole issue.  It's not just about me commuting back and forth to PA.  It's about all the trucks carrying all sorts of items that need to get to NJ (and by extension NY).  Didn't we learn during the Covid crisis how important this is?  The road issues lead to slow downs; more time in getting goods to their destination.  But it's just a Jersey problem, right?

I'm talking about what is happening in NJ and the general area because it's what affects me.  But there are issues just as serious and important happening all over the country.  (And the world.)    And we need to be aware of and working on these issues.  It's not a matter of it doesn't affect me, it doesn't matter.  Because it WILL affect you and it DOES matter.

Many problems that we have "inherited" are the result of ignorance.  Or "selfishness."  "That's not my problem; they'll deal with it in the future."   Road maintenance...that can wait for another 10 years. Those transit workers are threatening to strike...it's not going to happen; they should be happy with what they've got.   Updating and upgrading our air traffic infrastructure...we can do that next year.   Our present is the past's future.  What was ignored in the past, is now our problem.  We have reaped what they have not sown.   We can't do the same thing to the next generation....We ARE the next generation.  Problems that we think can be handed on to the next generation can and will come back to bite us in the butt sooner than we think.  And do we really want to be that selfish and honestly be total a**holes?  (Sadly, I'm sure there are plenty of people who do.)

We can't bury our heads in the sand.  Ignoring it all won't make it go away. We can't keep saying, "it's their problem," because their problem is OUR problem.  We need to work together (don't laugh too hard here) and build together.  This is our world...this is OUR planet.  We have used it and abused it.  We need to change that, not just for future generations, but for US, here and now.
