It's Too Weird

We live in a really weird world.  (And in world where I want to spell weird as wierd.  I always have to double check myself when it comes to that word...isn't that weird?)  There's a lot of strange and upsetting things going on.  Things like military parades (as a country, we don't generally do stuff like that; and I know we are celebrating the military's "birthday", but doesn't seem like a very fun way to celebrate), massive protests (speaking of "birthdays" didn't we rule out the king thing about 250 years ago; did someone not get that memo), assassination/attempted assassination on two legislators in Minnesota (if that story doesn't freak you out...), ongoing wars and conflicts.  And that's just on the world stage.  (Just?)

I know that "weird" is not the exact word that I should or could be using, but it's what I'm going to use for now.  Because weird is often unsettling and I am definitely unsettled by what is happening in our world.  And yes, that's putting it mildly.  I'll admit that I'm easily unnerved/frightened.  (Come on I blog about having anxiety all the time.)  However, it seems to me that the world (particularly the country I live in), is becoming less and less about loving your neighbor (which is what I believe we should do/try to do) and more about shoving/yelling/hurting your neighbor (which I don't get).  Not the kind of world I want to live in and certainly not the kind of world I want for my child (or any child for that matter).

So what can I do about this weird world?  I can voice my concerns in a myriad of ways and I try to.  I can say what I feel.  I can share my concerns with my elected officials and encourage them to act.  And I can use my vote to replace officials who I feel are not acting in the best interests of the country.  As citizens of the United States of America (land of the free and home of the brave), that is our right.  Actually it's our duty, but that's a whole other story isn't it?

Believe it or not, when I started to write this, I didn't want to focus on the crazy/weird of our world, but tell you about some strange stuff that has been going on personally.  So let me get back on the track that I wanted to start with...my personal weirdness!

I woke up this morning (around 5ish) to a strange noise.  The best way to describe it was that sounded like a dog was running around on the 2nd floor.  Only there isn't any second floor!  (Okay, there is a loft area which could qualify as a 2nd floor I suppose, but that's on the other side of the house and isn't connected to the bedroom area.)  I got out of bed thinking there might be deer outside the window.  (This has happened several times before and believe it or not putting coffee grounds on the ground by the windows seemed to have helped.)  No deer. I walked around the house to see if I could see anything outside, but there was nothing.  The noise stopped almost as quickly as it began and my husband slept through it.

Now, we do have an attic crawl space that goes over our bedroom, I think.  The house has three overhead spaces with only one that is easily accessible.  One over the garage which you can access via pull down stairs which I wrote about:  https://bfthsboringblog.blogspot.com/2024/11/bfth-presents-exploration-and-mysteries.html.  The loft also has a space, which you enter via a little door that you can crawl through (shades of Alice in Wonderland), but you really can't store anything there.  Then there is the "attic" that you can access through the ceiling in our office (which was once a bedroom.)  But there are no pull down stairs, you just push up a panel.  I convinced my husband to take a peak this morning and with a step ladder he tried, but he really couldn't see anything.  (And there were no noises when he opened it up and shined a flashlight in the space...again not that he could really see.)  If there WAS something up there, you'd think it would react.

So what was going on?  Was something running around on the roof?  You'd think squirrels would be a possibility, but this sounded "larger" than that.  It's summer so it can't be 8 tiny reindeer.  What is going on?  We've been here for 9 months and I've heard a lot of strange noises (and don't they mostly seem to happen after dark), but never anything like this.

There was weirdness last week too.  Somehow a baby deer (I'm thinking no more than a month old) to into our backyard.  It is fenced in and has wiring around it to prevent larger critters from getting in, but let's face it, if something REALLY WANTED to get in, it could.  We THINK, it managed to crawl in underneath some of wiring that is loose, but aren't sure.  What we do know is that it was hanging out way in the back and we opened one of the gates and "encouraged" it to run that way and go out.  A few days later, I noticed that the same back gate was open (how I don't know).  My husband went to close it. Then I spotted another deer (maybe the mom) in the yard and was yelling at him to open it again.  Amazingly, the deer leapt THROUGH the wiring and got out.  (We have zip tied the area in the hopes of this not happening again).  We purchased some deer repellant, which I hope will help once we spray, but we have yet to do so because of all the rain.  You have to wonder WHY they both got into the gated yard when there are tons on places to hang out that are not fenced in!  (Like the "island" of trees in front of our driveway or the unoccupied/unbuilt land across the street.)

Today's final weird (or at least I hope it is) happened when my husband washed one of my coffee mugs.  (I'd say it was my favorite, but I have a lot of favorites.)  The handle just snapped right off.  Husband tried to fix it with crazy glue.  I don't know if I'll be able to use it for coffee again, but I'm not ready to get rid of it because it really represents everything I'm feeling right now.
