It's Still Sort of A Mystery.


 I don't like to leave things hanging.   I like mysteries (or at least mystery stories), but I like to get them solved.  I was not happy just over a week ago:  https://bfthsboringblog.blogspot.com/2025/05/the-mystery-continues-devastated-again.html.  Days went by with no fish viewing and I waited for the pond guy to come and do an assessment.

He did come, while we were away and spotted a fish or two.  (He did not remove the definitely dead one.)  When we got back, I was able to spy one or two.  So all is NOT lost.  Hurrah!

Then, after we had one of the many rain storms we've had recently (and we have had a LOT of rain...my backyard is not just flourishing; it's become a jungle that needs to be tamed), I noticed that our aerator was not working.  So time to call pond guy again.

I was not here when he came, but my husband was.  Turns out due to the rain, the GFCI outlet tripped and needed to be reset.  (Should have thought of that!)  The trek to our house was not in vain, as we previously had two aerators working and I thought we should replace both.   I also thought we had another one in our shed.  We did (although it is a smaller unit so it doesn't "bubble'" as much) and our pond guy put that in as well.  (He assured my husband that the pond is well aerated and even if we only had the waterfall going, we'd be good.)  While he was working he, as well as my husband, got a surprise.

There is something else "living" in the pond.  While the turtles are still hiding (or have possibly moved off the property), the fish are mostly hiding and the frogs have disappeared, we have a long slithery (not) friend that has taken up residence.  That's NOT the occupant I want, but...It could explain why the frogs have vanished.  Mr. Slither would not cause the turtles to hide and the fish should be okay.  Or most of them should be okay.  I still have no idea how many there are!

Although I do have to say that when I returned to the Poconos the other night it was still (slightly) light out.  (Route 80 westbound now has 2 lanes open, similar to 80 east...traffic is still not great in the sink hole area, but it is better.  No more midnight runs for me, but I have decided that my treks back will be slightly later than I would like.   I should take time after work to have dinner and "relax" before I get behind the wheel.  I know, Bfth and the word relax do NOT go together, but I'll keep trying!)  My son had gifted me with a sunflower plant that I needed to repot in PA so I wanted to do that first thing.  While I was in the yard, I did walk around the pond and I *think* I saw 5 (maybe more) fish skittering around.  I guess they like dusk?  Or maybe quiet is what they like?  (Although it IS pretty quiet around here.)

So part of the mystery is sort of solved.  Of course I have another...

There is a deer that likes to hang by the front of our house.  (The backyard is fenced in so we don't generally have a problem there...although they could get in if they really wanted to).  I don't know why this deer (although there may be more than one), like to hang right by the front window by the dining room.  (A window that hopefully will be replaced within the next day or so.)  There is so much other land in the front (including an "island" of trees and other plants which separates the driveway from the road) that they could be (and should be exploring).  But this one has settled into our pachysandra.  And I noticed something "strange" about it.  It has something reddish coming out of its behind.  

At first I thought it was giving birth, but I saw it the next day and it was still there.  Maybe it's given birth and now has a prolapsed uterus?  (It's not just for humans anymore!).  Sorry there are no pictures for context, but...I will tell you that she hasn't been around as much since I sprinkled coffee grounds out there.  (It actually seems to work...maybe I need to try it in NJ as well...although those deer don't seem bothered by ANYTHING.)  Are there any deer experts out there?

With all the plants and wildlife in the mountains, I'm sure there will be many more mysteries.  So get your thinking caps on and stay tuned...

    Congrats on the fish. I only had one left in my little pond but probably because the pond froze this winter . My 60 year old pond heater died and was too late when I replaced it. The only repellent that works for me is Bobex. It doesn’t wash off in the rain. And lastly, my experience with 287 and 80 west was before 2 in the afternoon. That was before the problem with the holes.
    You will learn about the plants in your yard - little by little! Happy Birthday !

(Almost) Fully Furnished: Life at Bfth's Pocono Perfection.

 Friday morning the final (for now) furniture delivery arrived at our home.  We now have a dining room table and chairs, as well as a smaller table and 2 chairs for the "breakfast nook."  While we still need to put some finishing touches on the house (artwork needs to go on the walls,  may need a chair in the primary bedroom, and other decorative items), at this point our house is pretty much finished and where we envisioned it. So welcome to Bfth's Pocono Perfection! Pull on up and come on in. Look out from the front porch area and take in the colors on autumn. In the foyer/entryway you there is a small "tribute" to my parents and their love of the NJ shore.  There is another area by the front bay window that honors them.  (Foster's Famous Crab Stick lives on!) Cold Hearted B

 For many years I have never had a pet. Mostly that has to do with the fact that I have terrible allergies. So having cat or a dog is out of the question.  It made it difficult for my son who admittedly loves cats. It's just something we can't have not have.   As a result of not having a pet I have become that cold-hearted b****. I don't understand the pain that comes with the loss of a pet. I just don't get it. Or I just didn't get it. Recently his cold-hearted b**** has had karma slap me straight in the face.   When my husband and I purchased a house in the Poconos, it came with a pond. That pond was full of koi.  I know the previous owner loved the koi. Each one had a name. They were many of them and they kept having more babies, so some were unnamed. I loved sitting outside this past summer. I'd watch them swim. Sometimes they would leap out of the water. When I would feed them with their favorite snack Cheerios, they would rush to nibble them...
