The Virus Diary: Strange Summer

Image
We are almost to August.  I think it's fair to say that this is the strangest summer EVER.  I knew it was going to be a strange summer last year...that's because for the first time in...seemingly forever, there would be no summer read from Dorothea Benton Frank.  (I miss her:   https://bfthsboringblog.blogspot.com/2019/09/dorothea-benton-frank.html ).  But I didn't know all the other strangeness that was going to envelope me and everyone! I think about a year ago.  It was a great summer.  I mean this was me last summer (July 31st to be exact):    I know it's not my best side (no comments please!) but there I am and in front of me (just a mere few feet) is Chris Isaak along with bandmates Kenney Dale Johnson and Hershel Yatovitz.  Totally amazing. (Totally:   https://bfthsboringblog.blogspot.com/2019/08/a-chris-isaak-adventure-gentleman-and.html )   One of the highlights of my year and I thought for SURE after that night that I attend another summer concert. Well... This

The Virus Diary: Pandemic Getaway Wrap Up

After an evening of fireworks and sky watching (is it weird to say the moon was amazing while we were away at  Skytop ?) I had a good night's sleep and was ready to get up and start a great day.   We had a wonderful breakfast the morning of July 6th.  Rachel was working that morning (as well as the evening) and she took great care of us.  Even after yesterday morning's slip up, I had no worries this morning.  I made sure I specially ordered and Rachel was on top of everything.  I had my fruit, English muffin and bacon (why it is better at  Skytop ?  Seriously...when I make it at home its okay, but there it's fantastic.) The whole family shared a pot of coffee.  The crowds were dying down (now that the weekend and festivities were over) and I was thinking of heading to the pool at some point during the day.   After breakfast, I considered what I might want to do that day while sitting with my guys on...yes, the South Porch.  My son wanted to walk the lake, which he did.

A Special Day

Image
This is will probably be short and it will definitely be sweet.  In my mind, today is a special day; it's my husband's birthday.  And this year is a "significant" number.  However, my husband is not into celebrating.  Which is something I can't understand...I can't get it through my brain.  How can you NOT want to celebrate?  It's your day!    Even during this pandemic I had a plan to celebrate.  I purchased lawn signs and was going to go out and get balloons, but...the lawn signs came in the mail and he saw them and he wasn't happy.  So instead of putting them out on the lawn, I decorated the downstairs. (And judging from his expression and lack of decoration when I came in from this morning's walk...that was NOT a good idea...10 demerits for Bfth.  Well, at least I can use them for my son's birthday which 13 days away.) And I never got the balloons (which was definitely the right thing to do).  It IS his day and if he doesn't want the w

Why I Am Walking

Image
If you've read my blog before you probably know that I am a walker.  Specifically an early morning walker.  Although I've always been someone who enjoys a good walk, I didn't become really serious about it until 2012.  And when I say serious, I mean serious.  I try (although I don't always succeed) to walk at least a couple of miles every day.  At least when conditions permit.  When they don't, I try to do indoor walking via  https://walkathome.com/    Recently, I've been doing longer walks.  Partly because I don't have to rush to get to an office; my home office means that I can walk in the door at 7 AM and be working before 7:05.  However, the other reason is:  The Sesame Street Fun Run . Now as I said, I am a walker, NOT a runner, but when I learned about this virtual "run" I thought it would be a cool opportunity.  I could register for a "run" but walk wherever I wanted.  And all for a good cause:  the Sesame Workshop. I have been a f

Sunday, the 5th of July:  I get up and get dressed and head down to the South Porch with hubby while son gets himself ready.  I was hoping to quietly relax and enjoy "virch" (virtual church) with my headphones on my phone.  However, people around me were being a little loud and annoying (yes, I have turned into an "old lady"), reception was only so-so and my son came down for breakfast less than 10 minutes into it.  Knowing that breakfast can be chaotic, I gave up and we got on line for breakfast. There was a line and things were a little crazed.  We were taken back to a table and given NEW menus (they had eliminated some items in hopes of making things move faster.)  We did not have silverwear and I noticed that they were packing up lots of take out. (So much so that the manager said they would not be able to take any more orders...or at least that's what I thought he said.)   We ordered breakfast.  This time I decided to order the smoked salmon bagel (even tho

Happier Days in the office before Covid-19 I went to my office today.  That explains the title of this blog post doesn't it?  And the answer is, I wasn't. That was part of the problem. I work out of an office suite in NJ.  The corporation has many offices throughout the world, including 2 in NYC which just opened this week.  "My" suite is just one of 6 on the 3rd floor of an office building.  The suite can probably hold two dozen people the way it is currently laid out with offices and cubicles.  Even before Covid-19, most days there would be less than a 10 people in the office.  There is plenty of open space and the cubicles themselves are generous. When the country went into lockdown mode several things happened. The corporation's facilities management team went in and cleared everything off of desks, supposedly put items in boxes that were stored in the cubicles and scrubbed everything down.  And not just once; many times.  Sanitizers were installed.  On to

After getting a good night's sleep, I am ready to start my 4th of July.  This is a first for my family as we are usually at home with friends or at the shore with my family.  Also this is first for  Skytop ; their first real holiday.  (Yes, they had been open for Memorial Day, but things were really limited "back then" with restaurants only available for take-out.) I got up "late" for me and got myself ready.  My son was awake too (he stayed out the latest of all of us the night before), but he takes a while to get dressed, so my husband and I went downstairs and hung on the porch and waited for him.  I knew breakfast was going to be a challenge because the resort can no longer offer a buffet, which was how they previously would have been able to handle a large breakfast crowd. I knew there would be long lines to get in, so I was happy that my son didn't take too long and that when we went in, there really wasn't a line.  We were seated in the "
