The Mystery Continues: Devastated Again?
There's no mystery to what
I am about to write. You probably know what this about and where it is
going to go. If you don't, or need a refresher: https://bfthsboringblog.blogspot.com/2025/01/cold-hearted-b.html.
You might also know that we
spring we started over again: https://bfthsboringblog.blogspot.com/2025/04/spring-has-sprung.html.
They drained the pond. They cleaned the pond. They refilled the
pond. They treated the pond. They treated the pond again.
Everyone wanted to make sure that everything was good.
This past Friday they came
back. With them were 20 goldfish (2 large-ish and 18 "regular"
size). They also had 2 turtles for us. While all this was going on,
I was on a business call and working, so I didn't get to see the turtles.
By the time I got outside, they were hidden away. But I did see a few of
the fish. The two bigger ones I christened Loaf and Lazy; because that's
what they seemed to be. I never saw all the rest of the 18 fish because
for goldfish this is a big pond. I did maybe spot about a dozen and named
a few of them (even though I wouldn't be able to identify who was
who).
Friday, Saturday and Sunday all
had bouts of rain. That didn't stop my husband and I from going out and
checking on things. I could never find the turtles, but then the blend in
quite well with the rocks and there are lots of nooks and crannies for them to
hide.
I kept checking in on Saturday
and Sunday. I never saw all of them, but I saw a few. Lazy seemed
to disappear, but Loaf was hanging out towards the back.
Late in the day on Sunday, I
could no longer find Loaf. There seemed to be no movement in the pond.
Monday morning I went out
again. I saw nothing. Then I made out a tail/back end of a
fish. It was peeking out of rocky area. It was not moving.
From the size, I knew it was either Lazy or Loaf.
My husband and I have walked
around the pound over and over again. There is nothing to see other
than that one lone tail.
Are we to be devastated again? Does the mystery remain unsolved?
Nothing has changed since we
purchased this house which came with a pond and fish. We use the same
pond service. (And they have been great.) We use the same
landscaper. (No lawn, so no fertilizers...just plants that have been here
for years.) Our yard is gated so no large critters can get it.
(Okay, if they really wanted to they could, but...) There are small
critters; mostly chipmunks and birds. (I saw a robin using the
waterfall that "feeds" the pond taking a "shower" the other
day.) No changes have been made.
But something HAS changed.
Fish are dying. (I'm praying that the turtles haven't died as well, but...)
There's no explanation. Only heartbreak.
It’s hard. Our yard is generally a place of serenity. I love going out and hearing the water. I love watching the plants bloom and grow. I love watching the bees collect their nectar. I squeal with excitement when I see a humming bird. (I think there are two…we have two feeders and a bush that they gravitate to.)
I still hold onto a little hope. Our pond "guy" will be coming back later in the week to take a look. He seems to think that maybe the rest of the fish are hiding...along with the turtles. I HOPE that's true. Because I don’t know if I want to start over again. There's been too much heartbreak. (Yes, over goldfish.)
Let me be wrong. Let hope win this time around. Let me have good news to blog about soon. Let hope win.
