The Tropical Ed

Several years back I wrote a piece about my friend Ed:  https://bfthsboringblog.blogspot.com/2021/03/unexpected-2-ultimate-fab-soy-bomb.html.  While it's not required reading, it might help to give that link a quick look over before continuing on here.  (Go on...we'll wait.)

Way back then I wanted to create a drink in Ed's honor:  The Tropical Ed.  But I never did.  Finding pineapple soda isn't that easy and I'm not a big fan of sugary drinks.  (Oh, who am I kidding?  I am, but I'm trying NOT to be.)  I kind of forgot about it.  But then...

A friend of ours who is a musician also like to "explore" new sodas.  He and my husband like to try new things, particularly those that are zero sugar.  (Zero sugar IS all the rage.  Forget "diet" coke, zero sugar coke is much better.  The same goes for Pepsi, Dr. Pepper and so on.)  He had found a new soda, Tropical 7-Up.  We hadn't found it and he promised me a sleeve of the zero sugar version of it.  (I believe he owed me as we had found the zero sugar Shirley Temple 7-Up at the end of last year.)  The official line is that it is 7-Up with a hint of peach and mango.  I like both fruits very much, so I was game to try.  (Even though I found Coke Zero Mango to be a miss in my book.)  I liked the taste, though I didn't get much of the mango/peach taste.  However, it got me thinking about Ed's "drink."  And I knew it was time to try and recreate it.

Now, I have to say, that it has probably been over a decade since Ed last made me one of his drinks, so this may taste NOTHING like what he once made, but here's what I've come up with.  I'm calling it the Tropical Ed and as long as there is Tropical 7-Up, there will be Tropical Eds in my future.

Here's Bfth's recipe for the Tropical Ed:

  • Fill a red solo cup with ice cube.  (If you don't have a red solo cup, use any cup, but don't let it be real glass.  It should be something portable like the "mug" that Ed filled for me all those years ago:
  • Add in 1-1/2 ounces of pineapple rum.  (I didn't know such a thing existed...our musician friend had to tell me.)
  • Add in 1 ounce of coconut rum.
  • Add in 1/2 can of Tropical 7-Up (or as much as you can to fill the cup without overflowing)
  • If possible add 2 maraschino cherries (I perfer Sable & Rosenfield'sWhiskey Tipsy Cherries) and a little of the "juice" from the jar.
  • Gently stir
Enjoy!

Does it taste like what Ed once made for me?  I'm not completely sure.  Do I like it?  Yes.  Does it remind me of Ed?  You bet it does.

When the sun shine bright and there are cool breezes blowing through the trees this spring/summer you can bet that I'll be enjoying the Tropical Ed and revisiting the wonderful memories he helped to make.

Here's to you Ed!
