Random Thoughts: Wet Wednesday

It's the Wednesday before Memorial Day weekend.  It's cold (in my opinion) and damp.  If I'm lucky it will get up to 50 today (brrrr) and maybe the rain will stop by Friday.  Every time we keep moving towards spring, it seems like we get a sudden push back.

We've actually had some nice weather recently, for which I am grateful.  (Even though it has been incredibly windy.)  The break in the rain meant that lots of growth in both the front and back of the house.  I'm still uncertain as to what everything is.

There may be things that are weeds that I'm letting grow.  But it is very lush and green.  The days of tulips and daffodils are over, but there are some irises,

rhododendron

and (almost but not quite blooming) peonies

.  The most thrilling thing about the blooms is that the butterflies (or maybe it's only one butterfly?) has been enjoying the iris.

There are also quite a lot of bees buzzing around one tree/shrub (I'm not sure what it is).  And I swear I saw a hummingbird around that same shrub.  (But nowhere near the hummingbird feeder that we've refilled.)

The weather is preventing the pond from being restocked.  I'm looking forward to seeing some fish swimming around again.  I'm a little down because our 4 frog friends (Large, Medium, Small and Kermit) seemed to have disappeared.  (No sunning themselves over the past couple of days.)  The only "ground" activity I've seen over the past few days are the chipmunks (Nibbles and Nutmeg) who are quite skittish when they see me (or my husband), but when they don't have no issues coming right up on the front porch/landing or chowing down on the deck area.

The rainy days, of which there have been many, must be disappointing to those who are attending/participating in graduations.  Thankfully when I picked my son last week (2 years down; 2 to go), it was just damp and overcast.  It wasn't very warm.  (Unless you were my son carrying all his stuff from the 2nd floor and down the embankment to my car.)  What fun it was packing everything in.  (And I paid to have the mini-fridge stored over the summer months.)  I am no good at Tetris, but thankfully we got everything in.  (Although it was a good thing I left my husband behind in PA because there would be no place for him to sit!)

Before the first of his summer jobs begin (he's supposed to have 2, but there's not a lot of clarity on when it or if it will actually start), he's been enjoying time off to do whatever he wants to do.  After 3 days of hanging with mom (and me handing 4 loads of laundry...not that it was all his), he gets to have the house to himself.  (As I deserted him and headed back to the Poconos.)  He gets an "orientation" on Friday afternoon, after which he will start taking on new tasks.  So he has a few more days of "freedom" (although this job is only a couple of hours each week) before work begins and before mom and dad head back.  (Who knows what we will find?!  I'm just kidding though...our son takes better care of things than I often do!)

The rain may also hold up a big event that is supposed to happen tonight.  What might that be?  Two lanes of Route 80 east are supposed to open.  (They were supposed to open in mid-May.  I don't see the 21st being the middle of the month, but...) Two westbound lanes are supposed to open "late" next week.  I'm hearing that the weather has been holding things up.  (After an incredibly dry fall, we've had a wet April/May around here.)  Fingers crossed that this DOES happen tonight (supposedly around 10 PM) so that by the time I head eastbound things might be a little easier.  I'll still have to do at least one more late night/early morning trek back to PA, but then hopefully that will be it.  (Although I do have to say that I'm getting fond of the dark drive with next to no traffic.)  Again, it all depends on the weather.  And prayers that this concludes the 80 nightmare.

Of course we are just about to begin with crazy summer traffic.  This year I will get to see (via Route 80) how many people head to the mountains for the weekends, whereas in the past I've seen how many head for the NJ shore.  I'm thinking it won't be quite so many, but...

So let's wrap up the rain and get ready for the unofficial beginning of summer with some sunshine and warm weather.

Oh and let's not forget what this weekend/Monday is REALLY about.

(Hint it's NOT about mixed drinks on the beach.)
