Earlier this month my
son got an email. It was kind of weird. It was a kind of thing that you might
think was spam. This is part of what it said:
"You are invited to
attend the Undergraduate Awards Ceremony on Thursday, April 23rd at 3:00pm in
the XXX Library.
"You are welcome to
bring one guest with you to the ceremony. Business casual is encouraged.
"If you are
receiving this email, you will be presented with an award at the ceremony.
Please update your slide here by XXX to help our preparation for the ceremony.
Please find the slide with your name, upload your photo and respond to the
question! "
He had no idea what this
was all about. He has not a senior so it seemed kind of weird. But it was
legitimate!
Now since this was on a
weekday in the middle of the day, neither I or my husband would be able to go.
I felt bad not being able celebrate with him. On the other hand my son felt it
was weird that he had no idea what he had done or why he was getting some kind
of award!
I did some digging and
it seemed like once a year awards were given out to seniors but there are a
couple of awards that juniors would be eligible for as well. My son spoke to
his professors and it turned out that one had nominated him for an award but no
one had any other news or facts.
The fact of the matter
is, no matter what the award was, I was proud of him. It also showed me that
someone out there appreciated some of the work that he was doing. Although I
don't know what work that was!
When he got to the
library on Thursday for the ceremony, he saw that he was being given the Robbie
and Mary Boody Memorial Award in Art. Again, I had no idea what that means. He
really had no idea what that means! However, according to the description it is
given to the student in recognition of exceptional scholarly work in art! Again
I'm not sure what that means.
What I do know is that
he was given a small monetary award and that they took his photo with it.
(Where I can find this photo, I don't know. But you know I'll be scouring the internet and the college website continuously!) Also, one of his paintings
is now being displayed at the smaller of the college's two galleries (Spotlight
Gallery). (Next year he is planning on curating a show at the Union Gallery,
which is larger of the two. He will not be
showing his own work, but of the work of one of our relatives who was an artist
and died very young...but that's another story.)
My son is an arts
administration major. His focus is on the physical arts. He has taken classes
in drawing, painting, and printing. Next year he will be taking even more
classes in such things as digital illustration and photography. (In high school
he also studied graphic arts and digital photography.) He is definitely an arts
kid or perhaps I should say an arts driven young man. How many young men do you
know who spend their weekends going to museums and/or galleries in NYC? That's
MY kid!
I'm hoping that this
award will somehow help him find an internship sometime next year. (See
my previous blog post for reference and if you
have any “ins” or recommendations that I can pass along.) But most
importantly, I'm so proud of "MY" kid...what parent wouldn't be?
Thanks for the additional info. I had no idea that he was interested in those things. Keep us posted please. All of those interests are also mine and though none became a career they have been a big part of my life.
