autumn updates

Yes I realize it's not officially autumn yet. However the kids are back at school (don't forget when the school bus stops, you stop, no matter what side of the road you are on), the mornings call for a sweater or jacket, and pumpkin spice is all around us. (I'm rejoicing in that...nothing like Wawa pumpkin spice coffee on a cool morning.)  So we are in the depths of what I like to call Sumtumn which is my own made up in between season. It's when the leaves are starting to turn, yet there are still plenty of plants blooming.  The night is full of crickets chirping and in the day the butterflies and hummingbirds happily flit around.   (I have yet to be able to get a photo of any one of the three hummingbirds that inhabit our yard.  I have taken down the feeders [actually one fell to the ground after a windy day] because they seem to prefer flowers to sugar water.  Smart birds.)

Since my posting earlier this week some things, which were ridiculous, have actually been resolved. It may be hard to believe but my husband's package from Pfaltzgraff mysteriously left the Lehigh Valley for several days, with no real update, and then arrived in our township yesterday. It did not arrive in our mailbox yesterday because the box was too big and the post office does not deliver to our private road, only to our mailbox which is at the end of the street. So we had to go down to the post office and pick it up this morning. Therefore on September 3rd, the purchase which had been placed on August 22nd, finally made it into our home. I do have to say that I am very happy with our  Pfaltzgraff purchases (the soup mugs make me want some tomato soup right this instant),  but I still can't understand why mine came by UPS and made it in a relatively reasonable amount of time, while my husband's was shipped via USPS and took nearly 20 days.

My sons care package also miraculously arrived on campus yesterday. After floating around Pennsylvania and various parts of New York, and attempted delivery was made on Labor Day. Not surprisingly the business, AKA the campus post office, was not open to receive the package. So it was delivered late in the morning on Tuesday. I didn't think my son would be able to get it yesterday as delivery came during one of his classes which runs for 3 hours. However his professor gives the class a 10-minute break mid-class and he was able to run over and pick it up. My son is now appropriately sugared up. Thank God he brushes his teeth well and regularly or else we might have a cavity problem.

Finally, today marks my last day of vacation. I took two days off last week and two days off this week. Which meant a lovely extended weekend. However, I am old. Instead of doing something fun like most people do on their vacation, I handled errands and other obligations that cannot be done on a lunch hour or on a weekend.  Today after running my husband to the post office and then going to our local garden center to pick up several mums (because it isn't autumn without mum's and I pray that the local critters leave them alone since I love them so much), I am finally taking a few minutes (well hopefully more than just a few minutes) to sit back and relax with a good book in the backyard. The sun is out at least for the moment, and the fish are swimming around happily in the pond.   Cleaning the house can wait right? Life is good.
