Not So Great...
The current regime claims they want to make America great again. Some would say that America was never great.
On that I disagree. America has been great. NOT perfect, but great. I believe America was great when our forefathers (flawed and imperfect men) declared independence from a despotic king. When they signed their names on a piece of paper that would be known as the Declaration of Independence. What could be greater (although not perfect) than these words: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."
Since those words were written we have had times of greatness. (And again while I say I believe we had times of greatness, it does not mean that things were perfect or even great for everyone. Even greatness can be deeply flawed.) Times that seem to be long gone and unlikely to be restored in the near future.
There is a rumor, but no proof, that my ancestors lived on this land we call the United States of America before anyone from any other country landed in her shores. It's probably not true. What may be true (as there is some research that points to this) is that I had ancestors on the Mayflower. (I hope you don't need to Google that.) I definitely had ancestors who fought in the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. I say this not to be elitist, but to say that my family's been on this portion of the earth, which we call America, for a long time. I say this because I want this country to be as great as it can possibly be for ALL who reside here.
Unfortunately, I say that we have NOT made America great again. But we have made America (in alphabetical order):
- Alienated
- Brain dead/brainwashed
- Crass and cursed
- Dimwitted/Dumb, disreputable and despicable
- Evil, elitist and egotistical
- Fascist and fanatical
- Grotesque
- Heartless and hellish
- Ignorant and inhumane
- Judgmental
- Knavish and Kafkaesque
- Laughable and lazy
- Monstrous, masochistic and mockable
- Nasty and Nazi like
- Obnoxious and odorous
- Putrid and pathetic
- Questionable
- Ridiculous and rabid
- Segregated, stupid and seditious
- Threatening and tyrannical
- Unkind, uncaring, unhealthy, unsafe
- Venomous and vile
- Wasteful and weird
- Xenophobic
- Yoked (to those who treat people like oxen)
- Zealot filled
None of these could ever make us great.
As we close in on the day where we celebrate the creation of this once great nation, it is hard to celebrate the ideals which have been trampled on. I hope that someday I will be able to do so again.
