Let It Snow...?

After a fun filled drive to get my son and bring him back home on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving (https://bfthsboringblog.blogspot.com/2025/11/where-was-i.html), I am OVER weather.  But the weather isn't over me.  Weather isn't over anybody.  No matter what people might say (or think), you can't change about it.  You CAN bitch about it (and I know I frequently do), but you can't make a hurricane go away.  MAYBE you can try to make it rain (seeding clouds has some success, but you need clouds), but you're not going to stop a snowstorm.  Because if you could, I'd be buying into it big time!

I took my son back to college the Sunday after Thanksgiving (and if I can get it together, I will eventually have a post about the actual holiday) and it was, of course, raining.  In order to avoid the horrible trip that I had on Tuesday afternoon/evening, I insisted that we head to NY before noon. (Grumbling on my son's behalf, but...)

There was expected traffic, but we made it in an hour.  I had intended on going straight from there back to the Poconos, but in my haste, I had forgotten to adjust the thermostat in NJ.  (Where we have lots of smart systems, but our heating isn't one of them.)  I don't like to heat a house when no one is going to be there for a couple of days, so I drove back and made the adjustment.  I also grabbed something to eat because I had no idea how long the drive would take.

It was rainy and foggy in a couple of places, but not too bad.  A longer drive the "usual", but nothing as unnerving as Tuesday, thank goodness!

My plan for the week was to work remotely on Monday, as I usually do.  Work remotely on Tuesday morning and take the afternoon off.  I had some things I wanted to do (and vacation time that I needed to use), so I'd do those things and then drive back to NJ.  I'd be in the office on Wednesday and then head back to the Poconos as I usually do, on Wednesday night.

That was my plan.  The weather had other ideas.  Over the Thanksgiving break, there had been some serious storms/snow in the mid-west (https://www.npr.org/2025/11/29/nx-s1-5624991/thanksgiving-travel-winter-storm) The storms were headed east with Tuesday being the most likely time to hit.  But you never know...

I looked at 2 weather apps.  One said around 2 inches (dealable), the other said 5-8 inches (not dealable). Do you want to guess which one happened?

Or maybe just look at the photos:

Yes, the snow started around 6:45 (which is when we did an early morning run to the grocery store) and continued into the afternoon.  I'm not sure how much we got (I guess between 5-6 inches), but I can tell you that I (perhaps stupidly) walked up to the mailbox to get our mail.  (If there hadn't been a package waiting, I would have passed.  But the package, which was supposed to have arrived on Saturday, was finally here.  If you can explain to me why it went from NH to CA to Pittsburgh to the Lehigh Valley and then finally to my mailbox, I would love to hear the story.  Of course along the way it was often, "In Transit to Next Facility" and who knows where that is/was!)  The walk, which is just to the end of the street and not very far, took me about 2 minutes.  (Sad, right?)  It was snowing and blowing.  I got the mail and made it back to the garage, but my shoes (I know I should have worn boots...I need to find them or maybe buy a new pair?), were FILLED with snow.  I had "snow heels" inside the back of my shoe.  (Should have taken a photo, but...)  I had to take them off and then dump them outside otherwise I would have had a big mess.  (Or bigger mess than I made.)

While we had a lot of snow and flurries last season, we had very little accumulation.  It would snow and coat the ground and that would be it.  This would happen over and over again.  It was easy to get tired of the snow even if nothing became of it.

That's not the case this season.  Or at least that's how it seems to me.  Yes, I know we live in the mountains.  I know how cold it can be.  (Last year was cold; even if there wasn't a great deal of snow).   I know snow can come early.  (Even in NJ we've had freak storms, like the one in October of 2011, where Halloween was postponed till November.)  So I should be "used" to it right?  I don't think I'll ever get used to it.  (But Bfth, you live in the mountains!)

I will say that it looks very pretty.  It definitely helps with the holiday "vibe".  Although I will have to go out and brush off the solar sensor for the holiday lights.  It can't collect sunlight and power the lights if it's buried under several inches of snow.  But I'll have to do it mid-day when the sun has hopefully started to melt things out a bit.  We have been plowed out. (And I am so grateful for the service)  However, there is a lot of ice on the ground and ice and Bfth don't go together (unless we're talking about a cocktail).  (But Bfth, you live in the mountains!)

For the most part I'm going to stay inside and enjoy the view from the comfort of my couch.  While the winter solstice is 19 days away (Sun, Dec 21, 2025, 10:03 AM), I'll be counting down the days till spring (108).
