Irked
It's the weekend and I'm going to list 10 things that irk me because...well...because these things irk me. And if you don't know what irk means, well than that's at the top of my list!
- See above opening paragraph. Don't irk me.
Know what the word irk means.
- People (not medical professionals) who want to
make decisions about my health. I know my body better than you
do. Just like you know yours better than I. I would never presume
(or ASSume) to know what would be best for your health. I probably
don't know you, and even if I do, I don't know you well enough to tell you
what you should be doing. For example, I have some serious
allergies, and for that reason, I am unable to receive certain
vaccinations. (I'm not talking about Covid-19.) For example
some season flu vaccines are cultured in egg. The yellow fever
vaccine is cultured in egg. Because of my allergies, I would not be
getting those vaccinations. (Note: there are flu vaccines that
I am able to get that are not cultured in egg.) Just because I
cannot get those vaccinations, doesn't mean you shouldn't. And I
would never tell you not to. Your health is your health.
Others, who are NOT medical professionals (for example politicians and
busy bodies) should NOT tell me or you what you can or cannot do.
- People who are WILLFULLY uneducated. I'm not
talking about children. I'm not talking about people who haven't
learned things yet. I'm talking about people who purposely keep
themselves in the dark. For example, when I was writing about item
#1 on this list, I THOUGHT that a tetanus shot was one of the things I
could not get due to my allergy. But then I did a little research
and found out I was wrong. When I was offered one, I was unsure and
so was the medical professional who offered, so at the time, we decided I
would not get one. However, now that I have done my research, I have
learned and educated myself. People who purposefully keep themselves
in the dark about things or who choose NOT to learn the facts (for
whatever purpose), really irk me.
- People who lie. I'm not talking about "white
lies;" you know when someone makes cookies and they are burnt
and taste horrible, but you say they are good anyway. That's not
what I mean. I mean flat out untruths. Purposeful
untruths that only benefit the liar. Like if I said, I just turned
30 and I weigh 110 pounds. I may want those to be true, but they are
obvious lies. (And anyone doing any little bit of research would
know that they are lies.) There are people who constantly lie.
They irk me. (Okay, they more than irk me.) If someone
continually lies, they are not trustworthy. Why would someone
continually lie? What purpose does it serve? (Think about
it. REALLY THINK!) Certainly it's not a good purpose. And
after all one of the 10 commandments is that you shouldn't lie.
(Exodus 20:16: Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.)
- People who claim to be Christian, but don't follow the
teachings of Christ. I'm not asking anyone to be perfect (although
it would be nice), but it seems to me Christians should follow
Christ. You know that middle eastern guy whose mother was unwed, was
an immigrant (definitely undocumented) and who traveled around the
area telling parables like (my personal favorite), about the good Samaritan.
Maybe I'm reading the wrong bible? But mine seems to indicate that
we should feed the hungry, care for the sick, etc. Am I misreading
this? I don't think so and it irks me that people use the Christian
as a title and not as a way of life. I could be wrong, but...
- Those who don't care about the future. Sure will all be
dead someday (but we don't have to do things to make it happen sooner
rather than later). Does mean we shouldn't try to make the future
better? As human beings aren't we supposed to leave a positive
legacy? I don't understand why some people don't seem to care about
what will happen after they have left this world. Why wouldn't people want
their children and their children's children to inherit a better world?
Shouldn't we all want things to be better for everyone? Why be
short-sighted and only care about themselves and today? It's selfish. It's
stupid, in my opinion. It really irks me.
- People who claim to be "pro-life," but who
are really only anti-abortion. (See point #2). If you are pro-life
than logically you should also care for every single person who lives on
this planet. You should want every person to be fed, housed and
cared for. You should be against the death penalty...no matter what
crime was committed. "Pro-life" means ALL life.
Otherwise you're not pro-life...you're a hypocrite.
- Pedophiles & Predators. Do I need to say
more? How about people who protect pedophiles and predators. I
really DON'T need to say more. There is no if or buts about
it...and definitely NO EXCUSES. Bad people. (And so are Nazis,
but I always thought that was obvious.)
- People who are intentionally unkind/mean. What is
the point? Why should you choose to be cruel? What purpose does it serve?
Does it really make someone feel better to be mean to someone else? I
don't get that. I know that at some point in our lives we are all jerks.
It just happens. But I believe we should try to be kind. And if we aren't
who are we really? Purposefully unkind people are toxic and
cancerous. They irk me.
- People who are judgmental. Now I know we're all
judgmental at one time or another, but it's something I think we should
try to get away from. Why should I care what you have in your grocery
cart? What difference does it make if your skin is lighter or darker
than mine? I am thankful that we are all different. How boring life would
be if we were all the same. So why should we judge one another by
how we look or by how we act? We don't know what is going on in someone's
life so leave the judgment at home.
In writing this (and I left out a
lot...I'm sure you're glad about it), I realized that it's not necessarily
"things" that irk me, but people and their actions or
inactions. If you're irked by what I have written, then I guess you
should stop reading this blog. (My feelings won't be hurt...and it
doesn't matter if they are.) If like me, you are irked by some of it or
more to the point, downright outraged, well I guess we've all got some work to
do. Let’s get to it.
Amen to everything.
