Fridge Issues

I don't know what it is about refrigerators and me; we just have issues.  Lots of issues like:

  • 2011:  in the midst of a bitter cold and icy winter, my fridge starts "smelling" funny.  I have to transfer most of the contents of the fridge to my parents’ house.  Because the house was built prior to fridges being at thing, we have a freezer and a small fridge in the basement which helped.
  • 2018:  a kid doesn't shut the freezer all the way and:  https://bfthsboringblog.blogspot.com/2018/07/rainy-days-and-mondays.html
  • 2021:  another fridge bites the dust:  https://bfthsboringblog.blogspot.com/2021/08/chaos-on-summers-day.html
  • 2023: The fridge at the shore dies:  https://bfthsboringblog.blogspot.com/2023/06/big-box-bs.html
  • 2024/2025:  We purchase Poconos house, which has 3 refrigerators and one stand-alone freezer.  The "main" one is in the kitchen.  It's big.  It's beautiful.  It can make a lot of noise (especially when the ice maker is turned on.)  When I decided to have a party for my husband's birthday, I decided to plug in the fridge in the basement (which is next to the stand alone freezer.)  I cleaned it.  The freezer section got cold; the refrigerator portion, not so much.  I'd say items got "cool" but not cold, even when set to high.  Unplug that sucker and move on to the fridge (which is the one pictured above and is smaller than your average fridge) in the garage.  This one worked too well...I had several sleeves of soda in there and well...they exploded.  Hubby cleaned it out and set it to be not so cold.  It was perfect for our party and while currently unplugged again, I like knowing that it's there if we need it.

So you get that I have "fridge issues" and if you read my blog post closely from the other day, you may know where this is going.  However, before I go forward, I have to go back again to last summer right before my son was going to move into his dorm suite for his sophomore year.  For his freshman year, I had rented a "micro fridge" for his room.  The rent was a little hefty and since he didn't really use the microwave portion, I decided NOT to do that again.  Instead, I purchased an "inexpensive" (under $120) fridge from Amazon.  It was larger than your "average" dorm room cube fridge and would be delivered to campus for us.  All we would have to do when we got there would be to go to the mail room (where it would be delivered) and pick it up.  So much easier than buying one and trying to stuff it into the car along with all his other stuff.  There was just one problem...

He was to move in on Sunday and the fridge was to be delivered on Friday.  And it was delivered in Friday...to someone's house about a mile away!  The address wasn't even close!  We wouldn't have known about it but the gentleman who found it on his porch called the college and the college called us.  We were going to try to pick it up when we dropped my son off, but campus staff/security were kind enough to drive over and pick it up that evening and drop it off in my son's suite.

But, that's not the end of the story...

As my son was getting ready to pack up for the summer, we didn't know how we'd get his stuff AND the fridge home in one trek.  I thought about going out a week or so before, but then considered just having it put in storage for the summer.  The school advertised Storage Scholars and I thought:  Great...they'll do the work.  You had to pay an upfront "registration" fee of $50 and then pay monthly fee.  It pretty much came out to what I paid for the darned thing, but I thought it would be convenient.  Well...

In the email that was sent to us after I paid the fee they said:  "Lock your items in your room anytime between May 8, 2025 - May 14, 2025 and go home! We have a partnership with XXX College and will unlock your room and move everything into storage after the campus is closed between May 14, 2025- April 15, 2025" (Maybe this should have been a clue that they weren't that focused.  I'm ASSuming they meant August 15, 2025)

"Invoice Reviews

"Your items will be picked up by our team and an itemized invoice will be sent to you typically within 14 days of pick-up. All pricing terms are based on a 4-month minimum. Once you receive the email that your invoice is ready to be viewed, you will have 7 days to pay the balance or contact us to set up a payment plan. If you do not do either of these steps, you will begin accruing late charges at a rate of $2/day.

"Scheduling a drop-off

"If you are returning to live on-campus: Your items will be ready and waiting in your room for you if you are arriving back to school during your campus’s move in week - (August 21, 2025 - August 21, 2025)! We have a partnership with XXX College and will move everything from storage into your new room the week before you arrive between August 18, 2025 - August 20, 2025)."

My son was the last one in his suite to leave.  He carried all his stuff down to the car, leaving the fridge behind.  Easy, right?

Summer flew by as it usually does.  My son's roommate moved in first and there was no fridge.  We moved my son in on Sunday and...No fridge.

Now, here's where I made my mistake.  (Because I own up to my errors.)  I never noticed that my credit card was not billed for the monthly fee.  That is my mistake, but...

I called Storage Scholars on Monday to find out where the fridge was.  That's when I found out that when they went to the room on May 30th (what happened to mid-May?), there was no fridge.

No fridge?  They go to pick up and there's nothing there?  They have my phone number.  They have my email address.  And yet nothing.

Today, I called the college's office of residential education.  I was very polite.  The woman on the phone was very polite.  And sure enough on May 30th, Storage Scholars let them know that there was no fridge.  No one from the college ever called us about that, not that it's really their job.

So here we are with a missing fridge.  Someone from the office of res ed is supposed to get back to me or my son.  I'm not holding my breath.  Something tells me that someone out there has my fridge and we're never going to see it again.  I hope I'm wrong, but...

It's just another bullet point on my fridge issues list.  And somehow I doubt as if it will be my last.

UPDATE:  School was not able to find the fridge (no surprise there), but they will supply a new, clean one to him.  (I'm betting it's smaller, but...)  So good job college; bad job Storage Scholars.
