May Is Here

...and my heat is still coming on.  I know soon I will be complaining about how hot is outside...or maybe not.  It just seems like the cold will never end.  (And I’m not just talking about the mountains of the Poconos; it’s been cold in NJ too!)

At least as I write this the sun is out. (Fingers crossed that it stays that way and will warm up things.) I so want to go outside and get some of that vitamin D. Its spring darn it!  Let’s feel that spring weather.  It’s MAY!  That’s practically summer, we need warm, sunny days!  I need warm sunny days!

Also as I write this, one of the guys from the pond company is doing a cleaning.  I am so impressed with the company (especially as I realize what a small company it is and how young the owner is...which makes me feel really old, but...).  We now have an annual contract with them.  So I've already paid them for the year...no unexpected bills.  And they will come out regularly for a cleaning.  (Better than what we do regularly.)  Furthermore, the owner texted me and told me what day they'd be here and then texted me this morning to let me know approximately what time.  The guy was here 2 minutes before the estimated time of arrival.  I don't know all of what the guy is doing (it's not the owner who we've gotten to know over the past 2 years), but I'm thinking I'm getting my money's worth AND I'm getting peace of mind.  (I suspect this also makes for happy fish, but…)

On the other end of the spectrum is the landscaping company.  They did show up on Tuesday (when I was at the office).  I had sent a friendly reminder text the day before in the hopes of prompting them.  Did they need it?  I don't know.  Did it help?  I don't know, but it didn't hurt.  They did do a good job.  The backyard is much cleaner.  From what I understand they worked almost all day on Tuesday.  They came back on Wednesday and spread some mulch.  There is still a bag of mulch on the side of the house and there is a small pile of clippings from the bushes in the back waiting to be taken away.  No one came yesterday and I have no idea if anyone is coming today.  I'll be honest, I'm hesitant to follow up because I still don't have a written estimate (which I did ask for) and I'm not in a rush to pay them.  I spent a lot of time chasing them down to get the work done...I'm not chasing them down to pay them.

The two companies are such contrasts.  The landscaper is old school.  I know he's been around a while.  I also know he has had some big contracts.  But I'm not seeing the level of professionalism that I'm seeing with my pond company.  I thought the "young guys" didn't have a work ethic.  (Guess you should never believe what "they"' say or generalize.)  I keep telling the owner of the pond company how impressed I am.  And I am!  He wants good reviews; he wants customers and he's going to get them and keep them with this level of customer service.

So what does this “old lady” want?  Warm days and quality customer service.  Is that asking too much?  Or am I just that old lady who complains too much?

Don’t answer that question!  But go out and have a great weekend!

(UPDATE:  Pond guy is finished.  When he was done, he rang the bell and told me exactly what he did [which I have promptly forgot] and asked me if I had any questions.  He shook my hand [he's got a good grip] and told me to have a good weekend...THIS is the kind of service all companies should be giving!)
